GUIDED PRACTICE is an instructional model made of up of two different stages. The first stage involves introduction of new content and the second stage involves in guided and independent practice. The teachers role is to explain or model new content and provide opportunities for students to practice. The students role is to attentively listen to the teacher and take adequate notes then apply new material to practice problems.
INQUIRY is an instructional strategy that allows students to question, investigate, collect data, and communicate their results. An inquiry lesson must have both a question to be answered and a data collection portion. Depending on the amount of scaffolding, inquiry based learning can either by verification, structured, guided or open depending on if the lesson is student or teacher driven. The teachers roles is to provide students with a problem to solve and the students role is to investigate and determine a probable solution.
POE, or Predict-Observe-Explain, is an instructional model that allows students to predict what scientific phenomena they are about to observe. Students will then investigate the questions and use their observations to create a classroom answer. The teachers role is to provide students with deeper scientific meaning and expand upon students understanding. The students role is to create an hypothesis about why an event occurs, investigate that event, and either support their idea or disprove their idea and create an alternate conclusion.
